Power Restored After Gombe Disturbance Triggers Partial Grid Collapse

Electricity supply has been fully restored across affected areas of the country following a voltage disturbance on the national grid that led to a partial system collapse on Tuesday.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) said the incident occurred at about 10:48 a.m. on January 27, 2026, and originated from the Gombe Transmission Substation.
In an update issued on Tuesday, NISO explained that “the national grid experienced a voltage disturbance which originated from the Gombe Transmission Substation,” noting that the disruption quickly spread across key parts of the transmission network.
According to the system operator, “the voltage disturbance rapidly propagated across the network, affecting Jebba, Kainji, and subsequently Ayede Transmission Substations.” The situation was worsened by “the tripping of some transmission lines and generating units,” which ultimately resulted in what NISO described as “a partial system collapse.”
NISO, however, stressed that the incident did not amount to a total grid failure, contrary to reports circulating in some sections of the media.
“The incident only affected part of the grid therefore not a total collapse as reported by some media organizations,” the operator said, seeking to clarify the scope of the disturbance.
It added that swift intervention helped to prevent a prolonged outage. “Appropriate corrective actions were immediately implemented to stabilize the system and restore normal operations,” NISO stated.
Restoration efforts, according to the statement, commenced shortly after the disturbance. “Restoration, which began at about 11:11 a.m., has since been completed,” the operator confirmed.
NISO further assured electricity consumers that normalcy has returned. “The national grid has been fully restored and electricity supply across the affected areas has since returned to normal,” it said.
The system operator also directed the public to its official platforms for verified updates, noting that “additional information can be obtained from our website.”
Tuesday’s incident adds to ongoing concerns around grid stability, even as operators continue to emphasize rapid response measures and system recovery efforts when disturbances occur.
