The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 75MVA 132/33kV power transformer at the Mile 50 Abakaliki Transmission Substation in Ebonyi State, a move expected to significantly improve electricity supply to the state and parts of Cross River.
The commissioning, carried out on January 24, 2026, has raised the substation’s total capacity to 135MVA, strengthening its wheeling capacity and allowing more bulk power to be delivered to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for onward distribution, TCN said.
According to a statement signed on Wednesday by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs at TCN, the upgrade is part of broader efforts to reinforce the transmission network in the South-East and neighbouring areas.
Speaking on the development, the General Manager, Enugu Region, Dr. Thomas Inugonum, GM (Transmission), said TCN is taking additional steps to further expand capacity at the facility.
He “revealed that TCN has approved the procurement of a new 60MVA power transformer to replace a decommissioned leaking unit.” He added that the new installation “will add 48MW to the substation’s capacity upon completion.”
TCN noted that the transformer project falls under its ongoing collaboration with the World Bank, targeted at strengthening Nigeria’s power transmission infrastructure and improving the reliability of electricity supply nationwide.
The company said the latest commissioning underscores its commitment to expanding grid capacity to meet growing demand, particularly in states that have faced supply constraints due to limited transmission infrastructure.
