The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Federal Ministry of Finance, has sensitized communities in Abia, Imo and Anambra States on the proposed reconstruction and upgrade of the Alaoji–Onitsha 330kV Single Circuit Transmission Line, as part of efforts to strengthen electricity supply reliability in the region.
The sensitization programme, held from January 6 to 8, 2026, targeted Project Affected Persons (PAPs) across twelve local government areas along the transmission line corridor in the three states. It focused on informing affected communities about the scope of the project, safety considerations and compensation plans ahead of construction.
Speaking during the exercise, the Project Manager, Engineer (Mrs) Omobola Sobo, explained that “the AfDB-funded project involves upgrading the existing Alaoji–Onitsha transmission line to a quad circuit configuration using advanced quad conductors.” She noted that “the upgrade would more than double the line’s capacity, thereby improving electricity supply reliability and meeting growing consumer demand.”
Also addressing stakeholders, the Assistant General Manager (HSE), Mr. Aromeh Adole, emphasized that “the sensitization exercise was a critical step ahead of the planned payment of compensation to Project Affected Persons (PAPs) and the clearing of the Right of Way (RoW) for the safe execution of the reconstruction project.” He stressed that “this is to ensure public safety within the transmission line corridor during the construction exercise.”
Adole further assured affected communities that “all affected property owners would receive appropriate compensation in line with approved guidelines, following the completion of the final verification process.”
To ensure smooth execution of the project, TCN disclosed that it will work with PGM Nigeria Limited, the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) Implementation Consultant, to implement the RAP for PAPs and facilitate the clearing of the transmission Right of Way under the AfDB-funded initiative.
The Alaoji–Onitsha transmission upgrade forms part of broader efforts by TCN and its partners to expand grid capacity, improve power delivery and support Nigeria’s growing electricity demand across the South-East region.
