The Federal Government has handed over newly constructed Veterinary Primary Health Centres to the Lagos and Ogun State governments as part of efforts to strengthen animal healthcare delivery and improve livestock productivity across the country.
The projects, executed through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD), were handed over in Epe, Lagos State, on May 13, 2026, and in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, on May 5, 2026.
According to the ministry, the centres are part of the Federal Government’s initiative to establish 774 Veterinary Primary Health Centres in all local government areas nationwide.
Speaking during the handover ceremony in Epe, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, represented by the Director of Animal Health and Reproductive Services, Alao Mitchell, said the initiative was designed to bring animal healthcare services closer to livestock farmers.
Maiha said the centres would improve disease surveillance, prevention and control, while also enhancing rural livelihoods.
“The initiative was aimed at bringing animal healthcare services closer to livestock farmers, improving disease surveillance, prevention and control, and enhancing rural livelihoods,” he said.
He added that the facilities would strengthen veterinary service delivery and contribute to improved livestock production and food security nationwide.
The minister also commended the support provided by Olawale Raji Elenwhe toward the successful completion of the Epe project.
The Veterinary Primary Health Centre in Epe was officially handed over to the Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, while the Ogun facility in Ijebu Igbo was handed over to the Ogun State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security through the Assistant Director of Veterinary Services.
According to the ministry, the modern veterinary facilities are equipped with consultation and treatment rooms, laboratories, administrative offices, storage facilities, water supply, electricity, and perimeter fencing.
The handover ceremonies were attended by government officials, veterinary professionals, traditional rulers, community representatives, livestock stakeholders, and members of the press from both states.
