The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) has paid tribute to the late Prof. Yohana Daniel Izam, describing him as a visionary leader whose life and work transformed Nigeria’s building profession.
In a statement released on Wednesday, CORBON Chairman Bldr. Samson Ameh Opaluwa,l, hailed Professor Izam as “a titan of the building profession—a visionary leader, a distinguished author, academic, and a man of exceptional character. His life was a masterclass in service, integrity, mentoring the younger professionals and the pursuit of excellence.”
The statement highlighted Professor Izam’s contributions to the regulation of the building profession, noting that his work as a Council Member of CORBON spanned the 6th Council (2017–2021) and continued through the 7th Council, where he served as Chairman of the Accreditation Committee from 2022 until his demise.
“Throughout these years, he was instrumental in shaping the standards of knowledge required for modern building practice in Nigeria, ensuring the same was incorporated into academic curricula of institutions. His strategic insights helped refine the regulatory framework that today ensures the safety, credibility, and professionalization of the training of Building students,” the statement said.
Beyond his regulatory impact, Professor Izam was also celebrated as a mentor and scholar. According to CORBON, “As a renowned academic, he dedicated his life to nurturing the next generation of Builders. His mentorship produced many of today’s industry leaders, and his commitment to intellectual curiosity and innovation leaves an indelible mark on the academic community.”
The Council also paid tribute to Professor Izam’s personal qualities, noting, “Professor Izam carried himself with a rare blend of professional authority and personal grace. He was cherished for his profound humility and was a source of inspiration to all who worked alongside him. He was known as much for his gentle spirit as for his professional brilliance. His life was a testament to the values of integrity and service. Though he is gone, his legacy stands as an enduring monument.”
While mourning the loss, CORBON said it also celebrated the lasting impact of Professor Izam’s work on Nigeria’s built environment.
“While we join his family and loved ones in mourning the loss of a distinguished colleague, the Council celebrates a legacy that has forever transformed the built environment. His contributions during his years of service on Council will continue to guide and inspire us,” the statement added.
It concluded with a message of respect and farewell: “May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace. Adieu! Professor Yohana Daniel Izam FNIOB, PPNIOB.”
