The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) has opened a three-day national workshop in Abuja aimed at strengthening advisory services for livestock farmers and raising the technical capacity of extension officers nationwide.
The programme, which brings together Livestock Extension Officers from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, is designed to deepen their knowledge of Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHPs) and ensure consistent, accurate messaging across the country.
Speaking at the opening session on Monday, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi—represented by the Director of the Livestock Extension and Business Development Department, Mr. Joseph Ako—restated the Ministry’s commitment to building a modern and commercially viable livestock sector. She said the Ministry is focused on an industry that guarantees food security, supports economic diversification, and improves farmers’ livelihoods.
Dr. Akujobi described livestock extension officers as “the lifeblood of the transformation agenda,” emphasising their critical role in translating research outcomes into practical guidance for farmers. “Your role in interpreting national livestock policies and delivering accurate advisory services, will determine the success of Nigeria’s livestock development strategy,” she told participants.
Earlier, Mr. Ako urged the officers to take full advantage of the sessions, noting that enhanced competence among field personnel would have direct benefits for livestock producers nationwide.
The training supports the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NLGAS), which identifies extension services as a key driver of modernised production systems, improved productivity, and sustainable animal management practices.
Participants will receive intensive instruction on a wide range of subjects, including Principles of Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) and Animal Welfare; Nutrition and Feed Management; Animal Health and Disease Management; Biosecurity, Waste Management and One Health; Breeding, Reproduction and Record Keeping; Housing, Handling and Humane Practices; and Extension Communication and Participatory Methods.
