Atiku Abubakar’s son, Adamu Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from the Adamawa State Executive Council, stepping down from his position as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development following Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adamu’s resignation, dated March 2, 2026, comes days after he declined to join the governor in switching parties, a move that had triggered political ripples across the state.
In his letter addressed to the governor through the Secretary to the State Government, Adamu said he was resigning “after deep personal reflection and careful consideration,” expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
“It has been a rare honour and privilege to serve under your leadership and to contribute, in my modest capacity, to the infrastructural growth and development of our dear state,” he wrote.
He thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in him and appreciated the people of Adamawa for their support during his tenure.
Multiple sources confirmed that Adamu is set to contest the Adamawa State governorship election in 2027. Though he has yet to announce the political platform on which he will run, his ambition has reportedly received the backing of his father, Atiku Abubakar.
His resignation is widely seen as a strategic political move ahead of the 2027 race, especially amid shifting alliances in the state following Fintiri’s defection.
Governor Fintiri announced his defection during a statewide broadcast, ending weeks of speculation about his political future. Twenty-two of the 24 commissioners in his cabinet reportedly joined him in crossing over to the APC.
However, Adamu and the Commissioner for Livestock were absent during the announcement, and their names were missing from the list of cabinet members who endorsed the governor’s move.
A senior government source had earlier indicated that Adamu declined to defect due to loyalty to his father’s political alignment within the opposition bloc.
